Gord Peteran’s Musical Box, commissioned by the Glenn Gould Foundation for its Glenn Gould Prize in 1996, is a machine for testing sounds. Its mechanisms are each operated by a brass and ebony knob. One internal device is a globe containing smooth rocks from the bottom of a fish tank, which swish together when the globe is turned. There is a crude xylophone, an even cruder geared music box, a contraption consisting of different lengths of metal rod that strike a piece of plastic when they are rotated, and a reed sounded by a homemade bellows. Turn another knob, and a single string is plucked by a Fender guitar pick. The box does for music what Peteran’s work normally does for furniture—isolating the medium’s basic premises and freezing them in a state of arrested development.

Professor Michael Elmitt, RCA, joined the University of Waterloo School of Architecture in 1971. Following a distinguished career as a designer in the UK, Michael’s work has been well documented in numerous design journals. As a Design Consultant, his work in the UK included concepts for the automobile, shipping and aircraft industry, as well as producing furniture for exhibition in the UK.

Since coming to Canada, his work has gained considerable recognition and includes architectural concepts, furniture, exhibition, graphics and small boat design. He has also curated the work of other notable artists and designers in Canada and continues to exhibit his own work

“Barbra and Joan initially saw my work at a Harbourfront show called Design by Commission. They asked me to do a piece to occupy the space by the front door,” says the graduate of Sheridan College’s School of Crafts and Design, Furniture Program. “Barbara, whose only instruction was ‘let if flow,’ must have been wearing polka dots at the time, which inspired the aluminum dots inlatd in the white holly “The sides are of lacewood veneer bent and laminated over a plywood frame. Two small legs support the front, and the back leans against the wall. Eckert made a pattern for the aluminum rim, which he had cast at a foundry. “For me it was an opportunity to go crazy and pull out all the stops. I’ve gotten a lot of mileage from this piece.”

A prominent part of Furniture08, the Furniture Society’s annual meeting, is a gallery of members’ work.

Arguably the most striking piece in the gallery is a credenza by Peter Tischler. He has used straw to create a remarkable fan pattern on this Art Deco-inspired piece.

Multiple materials. The marquetry squares on this credenza are made of straw.

Will Neptune, a master furniture-maker well known for his period reproductions, raves about the piece “Did you see that?!” he asked, eyebrows arching skyward. Clearly awed by the credenza, he went on to praise the workmanship and the iridescent quality of the marquetry. He says that the straw is specially grown in France just for marquetry, and that it contains silica, which helps impart the radiance.
